General Information

Registration is now open – Join us for the 20th “CML Horizons: Learn. Share. Grow” Conference

DATE: 28th – 30th October 2022
LOCATION: Marrakesh, Morocco

CML Advocates Network steering committee is excited to announce that the 20th CML Horizons will be a Hybrid event, with both in-person and online attendance options. As a first for Horizons, we will be taking attendees outside of Europe for the first time, bringing them to Marrakesh, Morocco, the hometown of Bahija Gouimi, our beloved first African and the Middle East regional leader.

In addition to developing our member advocates, the CML Horizons conference addresses topics like – New Treatment Strategy. In this event, we will hear from patients and leading experts about the challenges faced by patients with CML. We will also look at whether TFR is feasible in low- and middle-income countries, and whether or not it is the cure. Advocacy sessions this year will feature interactive topics such as access to treatment and evidence and data. The nature of Learn, Share, Grow is to deal with questions like these, and our conference offers the opportunity to facilitate and support quality education. The conference also provides a unique opportunity for exchange of ideas, interaction, sharing of best practices, establishing alliances and networking across borders, as well as opportunities for you to bring back to your own organization.

We plan to invite top speakers such as Prof. Andreas Hochhaus,  Prof. François-Xavier Mahon, Prof. MD Gianantonio Rosti  & Prof. Asmaa Quessar from Marrakesh and more speakers are expected to confirm soon.

We very much hope that you will be able to attend the 20th conference whether in person in Marrakesh or virtually from the comfort of your home. We have an exciting program covering both advocacy and CML science.

Our conference will provide you with the knowledge on how to make a difference in the lives of patients, identify opportunities in patient support & advocacy and learn from the experts – both patient advocates and physicians by networking opportunities with CML advocacy leaders around the globe.

How To Get A Visa To Morocco: Tips And Advice

The nationality of the traveller determines whether or not a visa is required. Moroccan visa requirements do not apply to citizens of several countries, so they can travel to Morocco without obtaining one. Click here to view the list of countries whose citizens are exempt from a Moroccan entry visa: https://www.consulat.ma/en/list-countries-whose-citizens-are-exempted-entry-visa-morocco

For countries where Morocco is not represented, requests must be made to the diplomatic mission accredited in that country or to the Honorary Consuls. In the absence of these representations, requests will be addressed directly to the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Directorate of Consular and Social Affairs – Rabat (visa@maec.gov.ma) for a visa to be issued at the airport. By clicking the link below, find out what type of visa you may need and which documents you will need. https://www.consulat.ma/en/visitingexploring-morocco

Additionally, you can find information on this page https://visaguide.world/africa/morocco-visa/ Lidija, our Head of Member Relations, Events & Programme Manager, will be able to supply you with accompanying (supporting) documentation when you apply for the visa prior to commencing your application.

Accompanying (supporting) documents that will support your bis application will be:

  • Hotel Confirmation
  • Invitation letters by:
  • Local Patient organisation – AMAL
  • Local logistic agency
  • CML Advocates Network – LePAF that will be detailing that all costs including travel, hotel food will be covered by LePAF

On average, Morocco visas are processed in two weeks (10 business days), but it may take longer in some cases. The processing time may be longer if you are missing any documents or if it is a busy time of year. For this reason, you should contact Lidija before applying.

We would like to remind you that you need to make sure you have valid travel documents with a valid passport for at least six months, and if you need help, please do not hesitate to contact Lidija at; lidija@cmladvocates.net or on mobile: +389 78388235 (available on; WhatsApp / Viber & Telegram).

City of Marrakesh

Known as the Red City, Marrakech is Morocco’s second largest city. It has about 800,000 residents and most of the houses are colored red. Known as the pearl of Morocco, Marrakech Medina is a colorful city of entertainment. The city is a major economic center with several upcoming industries and markets. It’s located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and has a stunning landscape. This city is mainly divided into two parts: the medina, which is the old fortified city, and the modern city nearby (called Gueliz). A shimmering white snowy winter and a warm, humid summer make up the city’s wonderclimate. There is a strong sense of sociability and warmth among the inhabitants of this city that is renowned all over the world.

The name comes from the Berber words ‘mur(n) akush’, which means ‘land of gods’. Marrakech was the name given to Morocco by Arabs, Persians, and Europeans until a few decades ago. From Spain to Senegal, it was the capital of a vast empire founded in the 11th century. Almohads continued to develop it in the 12th century. 9km of red earth wall still exists from the time of the Almoravids. By the 16th century, the Saadian Empire was ruling over it. Many of their buildings and tombs have been preserved well. The Sultan of Alaouits- Moulay Ismail later conquered it. Under French rule, it was governed by Pasha El Glaoui in 1917. In 1956, King Mohammed V took over, but the fortunes were confiscated after his death.

In the later years, Rabat became the capital and Marrakech became a provincial capital. With an area of 31,160 kms, it is now the capital of Marrakech Tensift el Haouz region.

Marrakesh City Tour on Sunday

Enjoy a half day guided city tour of Marrakech. Stop first at the Koutoubia Mosque, which is an old monument built under the reign of the Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur (1184 to 1199). This monument inspired other buildings such as the Giralda in Seville in Spain and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Stop next at the Bahia Palace. This Palace was built in the late 19th century and was intended to capture the essence of the Islamic and Moroccan style. Continue the tour with the world famous Jema El Fna Square where you will enjoy amazing performances of traditional activities by storytellers, snake charmers, peddlers of traditional medicines. Your last stop is the bustling souks in the old medina.

For those interested, we will be offering an optional 3.5-hour tour on Sunday afternoon. This will not be an official part of the program, and those who would like to join this tour will need to register at the registration website or at the hospitality desk at the hotel.

At CML Horizons 2021, the community elected its seventh global “CML Horizons Steering Committee”, consisting of CML patient advocates from North America, Middle East and Africa, Western Europe, Latin America, Asia & Pacific and Central and Eastern Europe & West Asia regions.

Our Steering Committee is made up of expert CML Patient Advocates and is intended to serve as a leading team member for the CML community by providing support and help to implement CML Horizons annual meetings, as well as other projects, led by the CML Advocates Network.

The current term CML Steering Committee from North America and Central and Eastern Europe & West Asia is coming to an end at “CML Horizons 2022”, and hence we would like to ask the community to nominate candidates for the upcoming elections. If you are from these regions, this is your opportunity to become an active and professional CML Patient Advocate and empower yourself as well as your region. If you feel you can contribute, please submit your nomination.

The CML Steering Committee consists of one elected representative from each of the six major regions:
Asia & Pacific
North America
Latin America
Middle East & Africa
Western Europe
Central and Eastern Europe & West Asia
plus, the three CML Advocates Network founders as permanent committee members.

Deadline for nominations: 10th October 2022

To nominate a candidate for the election of the “CML Steering Committee 2022-2025”, we would like to ask your patient organisation to submit the nomination form by 10th October 2022. Every CML Advocates Network member organisation can nominate only one candidate from their region. If you represent that organisation, you may also nominate yourself. A list of CML Advocates Member organisations can be found here: http://www.cmladvocates.net/members.
